A SEPECIALITY'
Spotted by David Gaylard, this rendered
side gable bears the lettering:
'THE NEW JACKET
&
COSTUME CO.
MOURNING ORDERS
A SPECIALITY
'The Textile Clearing House' operated from this address
during the
1940s, selling curtain textiles. Later 'Oddie's Textiles' operated from
the same shop, selling dress
fabrics, towels, flags, coats and more during the early 1950s (source: The Clitheroe Advertiser and Times).
It appears that previous businesses advertised in the same way –
perhaps under that layer of white paint. There is a faint graphic
flourish rising up behind 'THE' in the first line; also evidence of a
large 'O' which may have stood for 'Oddie's'. To the right of the
flourish, and in decorative letttering: 'SEE...' Other fugitive shapes
and
possible characters can be discerned. Large brown, serif'd capitals run
behind. 'Mourning orders' possibly reading 'W. HARTLEY'(?).
Interestingly, the premises were still occupied by a designer clothing
store in
2020. Perhaps a rare example of similar trades operating from the same
address over a considerable time – and under different proprietors.
