'CYCLE, AND, ELECTRIC'
19 Garrick Way
27.3.2025: a
contribution relating to shops at Castle Hill.

Garrick Way
'Thanks for a wonderful website. I attach a photo taken in Garrick Way
which I thought might be of interest to you. (Chris also attached
a map to show where the photo was taken).
Background info: the shops on Garrick Way were originally built
as a single three-storey block (with flats above the shops) in the
early 1950s. An additional two shops [nos.19 and 21] were added onto
the left-hand end
(as viewed from the road) c.1960 but this addition was only two storeys
high. The right-hand shop of the new pair was an off-licence,
with the left-hand one being a cycle shop which also sold small
electrical items (such as radios). "CYCLE.AND.ELECTRIC." was roughly
painted on the side wall of the shop (on the access road leading to the
rear of the parade of shops). As the Co-operative store (to the
left of the main parade of shops, as viewed from the road) had yet to
be built at that time, the words were clearly visible to anyone
standing at the eastern end of Garrick Way. Approximately 65 years
later, that sign is still there. Regards, Chris Fuller.'

'CYCLE, AND, ELECTRIC'
A remarkable suvivor of an earlier business. The
lettering resembles a neon sign with the darker red shapes,
painted onto the brickwork, behind the thin cream characters. The
sign-writer (and/or the proprietor) clearly was a fan of the comma.
This wall is part of a garage belonging to the shop. Many thanks to
Chris for spotting and photographing this example.
