Hutland
Road
Spotted in early March 2014 in Hutland
Road, east Ipswich – another example was noticed round the corner in
Sidegate Lane. Hardly, 'historic' lettering, but we thought that
this public lettering deserved recording here.

'IPSWICH BOROUGH
COUNCIL
CLEAN IT UP!'

The graphic device says it all.
Quite how they create these signs is uncertain. A stencil, to be sure,
but is it sprayed with a bleach to cut through algae and dirt, or with
a pale dye which will eventually weather away?
Tower Church Yard / Oak Lane
2025 images
It wasn't until the autumn of 2025
that we noticed another example of this type of pavement sign: 'BIN
YOUR GUM.'
The sign above left is close to the entry to Tower Church Yard from
Tower Street, the pathway which leads around St Mary-Le-Tower Church – in 2025 renamed Ipswich Minster. The close-up, above right, is at
the entry to Oak Lane from Northgate Street,
ironically adorned with a blob of chewing-gum on the 'R'. The lettering
is a bit more 'beat of the street' than that used in Hutland Road
eleven years earlier. The tiny heart-shaped full-stop adds a piquancy.
