Mystery
tablet in Slade Street
In July 2021, Margaret Hancock passed on this query relating to
the side wall of The Bull Inn, viewable from the very short Slade
Street – which links Key Street and Star Lane.
Above right: the tablet is just to the right of the lamp post.

Depending on the angle and light conditions, the weathered
charcters can be read in several ways.
We would hazard (and it is just a hazard):
'PARTABLE
WALL
1812'
Another reading might end in '...TALIA'. One can
only assume that this is a boundary marker indicating ownership.
We are very grateful to Margaret (and the original spotter) for drawing
this mysterious tablet to our attention and we'd love to know if anyone
has a solution. The Bull Inn is shown on our Paul's
and Burton's page
and the Grade II Listing text states that the building dates back to
the
16th and 17th centuries. So, 1812 is positively recent... See
that page for a 1902 map detail of The Bull Inn.
